Weston Park

Wednesday 19th/Thursday 20th September

This week year six visited Weston Park to experience what life was like “at home” in Britain during World War Two. The children created their own gas masks and viewed a collection of authentic gas masks—including one for a baby, toddler and child. They also had the opportunity to try out the Anderson shelter and Morrison shelter as well as various types of 1940's clothing including RAF, Navy and Army uniforms, clothing for the Fire Service, as well as ladies dresses, coats, hats and furs. In the afternoon the children learnt about and experienced a Black Out and Air Raid to understand what life was like for children as evacuees during World War Two.

Collective Worship

Thursday 13th September

This morning in Collective Worship, the children learnt about the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah. It is a celebration lasting two days where Jewish people celebrate their New Year. We learnt that it's a time for people to think about their priorities in life and to reflect on what has been achieved in the past year as well as a time of asking for forgiveness for previous wrongdoings. We looked at the rituals involved during this celebration including the blowing of the Shofar (a ram's horn trumpet). The sound of the shofar starts a ten-day period known as the 'Days of Awe', which ends with the festival of Yom Kippur.

PSHE - No Outsiders

Thursday 6th September

During PSHE, year 6 read a book called 'The Whisperer' written by Nick Butterworth. They discussed the reasons why some people may choose to hide their identity and how people are labelled by rumours and assumptions. The children then identified ways to stand up to prejudice and challenge rumours.
