Reading

30.06.17

 

The children worked in pairs to read their class text, 'Oranges in No Man's Land'.

We are really enjoying the book and the children are showing a lot of empathy towards the main character.

Eid Party!

 

We celebrated Eid at school by having parties in the afternoon! The children really enjoyed dancing, singing and playing party games!

Collective Worship- 30.06.17

Eid and Ramadan

 

The children discussed what they had done for Eid at home. As a class, we thought about why Muslims celebrate Eid. We also thought about those less fortunate than ourselves around the world.

 

"We celebrated by going to a big restaurant with our family!"

"I went to my aunt's house and she cooked a meal for my whole family!"

Friendship

 

The children thought about what it means to be a good friend. They discussed how to be a good friend and reflected on times where they could have been a better friend. In 5P, we have promised to be good friends to everybody.

Hindu Temple- Mandir

 

In Collective Worship, the children learnt about the features of a Hindu Temple.

The children were all very excited to see a Hindu Temple later in the day!

Hindu Temple Visit- 14.06.17

 

 

The children visited a local Hindu temple this week. They learnt a lot about the Hindu religion. including how Hindus pray and the key features of the Temple.

The children enjoyed looking at the statues of the Hindu Gods.

Collective Worship- International Children's Day

09.06.17

In Collective Worship this week, the children discussed their rights. The understand that they have the right to a good education, the right to food, the right to live in peace and the right to choose their religion.

Scream Machine- Engage!

07.06.17

We launched our new topic, 'Scream Machine' this week by investigating the science of roller coasters, discussing forces and building our own marble maze game! The children worked in teams to build a marble maze and then tested their designs.

We learnt about Ramadan in Collective Worship this week. The children discussed why people fast and donate money to charity during Ramadan.

PSHE- 23.05.17

The children were learning about role models in PSHE. They read an interactive comic book and discussed the scenes with their partners.

Maths- 25.05.17- Fractions

In maths, the children revised their learning on fractions. They can now add, subtract and multiply fractions.

Collective Worship- 23.05.17

In Collective Worship, the children learnt about Ascension Day.

They retold the story of how, in the Christian tradition, Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after he rose from the dead.

Christian Aid Week- 18.05.17

In Collective Worship this week, the children have spent several lessons learning about Christian Aid and how they look after people around the world. The children understand that charities like Christian Aid are important to ensure that all people get the help that they need.

Collective Worship- 12.05.17

In Collective Worship, the children learnt about the major religions that can be found around the world.

They know that we should respect all religions and that everybody is free to choose their own religion.

In English, the children were sorting comprehension questions into the following categories:

 

- Explanation

- Retrieval

- Inference

- Choice

 

The children then worked in pairs to answer questions about their reading books.

PSHE- 10.05.17

In PSHE, the children learnt about who and what can have an influence over them.

They know that influences can be both positive and negative.

The children know how to get help if they feel that somebody is having a negative influence over them.

In Collective Worship, the children learnt about the Buddhist celebration of Vesak.

The children understand that  Vesak is celebrated around the world and the it is a celebration of the birth of the Buddha.

Today, the children consolidated their learning on negative numbers. They challenged each other in games designed to test their knowledge.

Jainism

 

 

The children learnt about Jainism in Collective Worship. They understand that the religion is very old and has many followers around the world. The children learnt that Jains respect all life and try hard not to kill anything.

Identity

The children learnt about the different elements of their identity in PSHE. They know that we are all unique and special in our own way.

Worker's Day

The children learnt about labour day, or worker's day. They understand why people fought for an 8 hour working day and for better working conditions.

The children learnt about Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers and craftsmen.

Welcome back to school!

 

Where is this year going? It's summer term already!

 

The teachers in Year 5 are really excited to be back in school - We have such a fun, inspirational half term planned for the children!

 

Please remember to bring in your P.E kits for the half term.

A big thank you to parents for their support over the last few weeks; we've had world book day where the children dressed up and looked wonderful and class assemblies, thank you for attending. Comic relief will be happening soon. Please read the newsletter your children bring home for further information.

 

Todays newsletter had very important information if you are considering Grammar school for your child, after year 6. We have no control over the exams, and are provided by the grammar schools directly. Please look on the internet for more information.

Year 5 Stars of the week

All the year 5 teachers and Teaching Assistants are looking forward to meeting parents on Wednesday 25th January and Thursday 26th January. Children should have brought home your time-slot, to talk to your child teacher.

Measuring

We have been learning about measurement in maths this week. The children took part in some practical activities before applying their knowledge to written work.

Some children in year 5 took part in bikeability. They were taught about road safety before being taken out on the roads in the local area!

The children took part in an audio story about the rainforest. They learnt about the animals that live there and what they eat. They also learnt about the plants that grow in the rainforest.

The children used this information as part of a formal letter about the rainforest.

Safety Day

The children learnt about road safety, fire safety and online safety. They understand how to stay safe in various situations and know where to get help if they need it.
