Black History Day- Mary Seacole

Year 5 have enjoyed learning all about the life of Mary Seacole. She was a nurse who helped sick people during the Crimean War. We drew portraits, sequenced events of her life, wrote fact files, poems and diary accounts . Look at some of our wonderful work!

PSHE- Legal Drugs- 09.10.17

Today in PSHE we studied adverts for legal drugs. We talked about the pros and cons of these drugs and the choices that some people make when they decide to take them. The  children had some very insightful ideas.

Music - Autumn First Half Term

This half term we have been learning the song 'Living on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi from Charanga .  We are getting better and better!  Now, we can even play along on an instrument - the glockenspiel!  Take a look!

Maths Day - 28/09/17

We had fun in Maths today as we tried a different way of doing our lesson.  Have a look at the activities in the pictures to see what we got up to.

PHSE - The effects of alcohol on the body - 28/09/17

The children discussed the effects of alcohol on the body and the behaviour of the person.  We talked about how high concentrations of alcohol can cause different diseases, accidents and lead to risky behaviour.

Collective Worship- Roshah Hashanah -21/09/2017

We learnt a Jewish festival called Roshah Hashanah which is not just a celebration of the New Year, but so much more.  For Jewish people, the New Year is not on the 1st of January.  The New Year can be between late September to early October.  It is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve.   It is also a day of judgement; this means saying sorry for things you have done.  During this celebration there were many special foods that the Jews eat apples dipped in honey and sweet carrots.

Swimming every Tuesday and Thursday - 19/09/17

Year 5 are so lucky this year we are going swimming.  5S go on a Tuesday and 5F and 5A go on Thursday.  It is great to be able to have a splash around in the water with your friends and who knows, may be one day, we might need to save someone's life in the water...

Residential Trip to Oakerwood - 18/09/17 - 21/09/17

We were so lucky this year, 9 children went on a residential trip to Oakerwood.  It was a lot of fun and some parts were scary and challenging.  It was good to get away with your friends but some of us had very little sleep.

Trip to the Birmingham Art and History Museum - 6/9/17

To get us all excited about our topic this half term, we went to an Egyptian Exhibition at the Birmingham Museum.

We had a chance to look at some actual, real life (well really dead!) mummies, not just humans but animals as well.

It was amazing and quite gruesome in parts!  We had a workshop on mummification which was quite icky, even though it was only a dummy and not a real mummy.  We had fun carefully removing all of the dummy's internal organs and even tried to remove his brain!

Later on in the day, we had another workshop where we all managed to create a Egyptian themed painting on papyrus paper made from reeds.  It was interesting to see what we came up with.  All in all, we are now absolutely buzzing about our Ancient Egypt topic and can't wait to learn all about the boy Pharaoh, Tutenkamum!  Take a look at some of the pictures we took on our trip.
