Welcome to 1S!
Hello and welcome to the 1S class page!
We will keep you updated with all of the fun and exciting things that happen in 1S this year!
To get you started...
Mrs Simpson is the teacher in 1S and Miss Hague is her teaching assistant.
1S will have P.E every Tuesday and Thursday
Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and should be returned by Monday.
Phonics homework will be given daily so please make sure you bring your book to school every day.
Reading books will be changed weekly on a Thursday.
Mrs Simpson and Miss Hague are very excited about the year ahead and all children are settling in nicely.
If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch!
This half term, our History topic is The Queen. We are really enjoying learning about her life. This week we looked at her family. Working in pairs we made our own Royal Family trees. We labelled as many of the Queen's relatives as we could remember. Mrs Nott was very pleased to see some of our hard work.
We got the new year off to a good start with a whole day spent investigating! Some of the things we did included shape sudoku, making as many shapes as we could from multilink, using number cards to make the biggest number we could think of and sorting the letters in our names into groups.
Our D and T topic was 'Making Smoothies'. We had loads of fun! Firstly we tested some smoothies from the supermarket to see what we liked and disliked. Then we made a shopping list for Jane in the kitchen so that we could make our own.
Finally- the best bit- making the smoothies... What a great time we had! Some of the smoothies were delicious... some weren't quite so lovely!
Our mums came into school to work with us. Mrs Simpson read the story of The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson. We then had to think of as many adjectives to describe George the Giant. We showed our mums how we sound out words using our phonics.
Today was all about friendship in 1S. We talked about what it is to be a good friend and made beautiful friendship bracelets to give each other. We also gave our friends certificates explaining why they were such good friends. We had a lovely time and felt all warm and fuzzy by the end of the day!
Today at Alston we had a day all about UNICEF. UNICEF are an organisation who fight for the rights of children all around the world. In 1S we learnt about children in other countries who aren't as lucky as we are and whose rights aren't always met. We talked about children who struggle to go to school, feel safe or find clean water to drink.
1S were incredibly sensible and both Mrs Simpson and Miss Hague were very very proud of them.
Today was Children in Need. In 1S we all dressed up in our pyjamas and gave 50p to help children all around the UK who are not as lucky as we are. We also bought some delicious cakes from the kitchen. Again all of the money raised went to Children in Need. Mrs Simpson and Miss Hague showed us a slideshow of some of the poorly children we were going to help. In the afternoon we made Pudsey faces, decorated Pudsey and his pyjamas and coloured in beautiful Pudsey pictures!
Today was black history day. In 1S we learnt all about a man called Usain Bolt, he is a very fast runner from a country called Jamaica. We made a timeline of famous black people, decorated Jamaican flags and had a very special storyteller visit us to tell us a traditional Caribbean tale!
Today in 1S we have been lucky enough to be visited by a travelling theatre!
The theatre group told us the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We all sat quietly with our friends from the rest of Year One and had a lovely time!
Today was Safety Day in 1S.
We learnt how to be safe on the internet, when crossing the road and when dealing with a fire. We labelled and coloured in fire engines and firemen and we learnt how to stop, drop and roll.
Today in 1S we discovered that our Queen, Queen Elizabeth II, is now the longest reigning British monarch!
To celebrate we made and decorated crowns and learnt about the beautiful places that the Queen lives in.
